Cartwheels

Happy February!  So far, February has been positive, let’s hope it continues!

[ Thankfully I am still able to do normal everyday activities unlike many other RA sufferers, but the #1 thing I miss because of RA is doing cartwheels! So, if you can do a cart-wheel, do a few for me. ]

I wanted to share the calendars that I started this year.  I keep track of daily temperatures and pain levels/medication each day.  I’ve found it to be helpful and interesting.  Many believe that the weather is a major cause of pain with those who have arthritis.  They jokingly say that they can predict when the weather is going to change, or when it is going to rain by the soreness in their joints.  Well, it seems like when the temperature drastically changes, my knees swell.  I just so happen to live in Ohio, a state that is always unpredictable when it comes to weather.  Almost each time in January when the weather decided to be moody, my knees followed suit, though I can’t be absolutely sure that is the cause.  I will continue to keep record of the temps, and hopefully I can pinpoint which days I won’t be feeling so peppy.  I guess I am a meteorologist by default.

Basically, the arrows on the first calendar signify large temperature changes.  The most drastic temperature change in January happened on the 17th-18th, dropping 27 degrees.  The 18th also happened to be my most painful day of the month.  I found the correlations interesting to say the least.

On Feb. 1st I accidentally forgot to take my medications during dinner, so I decided to take them later in the evening after eating a bowl of cereal, since you are supposed to eat while taking them.  I’m not absolutely sure if this was the cause, but that night I developed a small itchy rash on my right cheek.  After looking at the side effects, I can’t really say that a rash was one of them, but I also can’t figure out what else would have caused it.  I was assuming it would continue to itch and spread across my face, but that never happened-phew!  Actually, today the rash is almost gone, so I will just have to pay attention if it happens again.  The picture below isn’t the best quality, but you can get an idea of what the rash looked like.

A few days ago I was able to workout at the YMCA with my friends Bre and Amanda.  I don’t have a pass unfortunately, so I went as Bre’s guest.  I honestly enjoyed working out so much, I wish I could go whenever I wanted to.  I was able to walk/jog on the treadmill for a half hour without pain, and we also walked around the gym.  I even attempted two weight equipments.  The next day however, I was definitely in all sorts of pain.  My right ankle was sore and my shoulders were unhappy with me, but it was worth it.  I realize I can’t push myself, but I can certainly endure moderate exercise.  Especially since I have RA, it is extremely important that I take care of my body.

Until next time, keep exercising!

1st Corinthians 6:19-20

Or don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?  You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price.  So you must honor God with your body.”
